Thursday 9 Oct 2014 – Red Moon – Tungkillo, SA

8:50pm moon has become a red/orange colour and nearby stars are becoming visible

A red moon occurs when the moon is full and the earth moves between the moon and the sun blocking the sun light from hitting the moon. We saw this happen at the lookout at Tungkillo in South Australia which is about an hours drive east just at the edge of the Adelaide Hills overlooking the Murray river land near Mannum. Here are some of the photo’s including a few not of the moon 🙂

Paterson’s Curse (Echium plantagineum) is an invasive plant species in Australia. The name Salvation Jane originated from, and is mostly used in South Australia, due to its use as a source of food for grazing animals when the less drought tolerant grazing pastures die off. Other names are Blueweed, Lady Campbell Weed, Riverina Bluebell, and Purple Viper’s Bugloss.

Some sort of Wattle with it’s yellow flowers. The sun through the branches was what caught my attention

7:59pm the shadow over the moon grows

8:23pm more of the moon is in shadow as the earth moves between it and the sun

8:39pm the red moon starts to become visible to the naked eye

8:50pm moon has become a red/orange colour and nearby stars are becoming visible

9:13pm the moon is now just a red/orange colour
